Great reviews for "Catalonia" - previously unrecorded orchestral works of Isaac Albéniz

3 November 2011

cataloniacdcoverIn the summer of 2010 I went to Barcelona to record the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) conducted by Jaime Martín in a programme of previously unrecorded works by Isaac Albéniz. And what a revelation they were - all fabulous pieces, full of Catalonian colour and vitality, especially the title track "Catalonia" which deserves to become a concert-hall (and Classic FM) favourite.

I was engineer, and the producer was my old Abbey Road friend Paul Baily. We recorded in the orchestra's home of L'Auditori in Barcelona - a beautiful modern hall with possibly the most helpful and friendly backstage staff of any venue I've ever been in!

Which roughly translates as "The work is enobled in this recording with the excellence of its faithful interpreters, who weave beauty and richness around the score of their Geronian compatriot. Everything is further enobled by the beneficial and scrupulous recording in the hands of engineer Mark Rogers."

Another excellent review (in Spanish) was published in Audioclasica magazine, which said that "recorded in extraordinary sound, OBC and Jaime Martín do an excellent job in projecting an aura of luxury".

UPDATE: 18 December 2011

More good reviews! The November 2011 edition of Scherzo magazine featured it as one of their "exceptional discs", and described it as "a stunning album". And in December the German magazine Das Orchester said that "The OBC under Jaime Martín make music with palpable enthusiasm, springy rhythms and smooth wind lines - in all respects an authentic interpretation, which is captured by vivid sound engineering."

"Catalonia" is released by Tritó Edicions.

Lendvai String Trio debut CD "Destination Paris" gets excellent reviews

destinationpariscover7 September 2011

The Lendvai String Trio - Nadia Wijzenbeek, Ylvali Zilliacus and Marie Macleod - recorded their first CD in the delightful setting of Champs Hill, West Sussex. Ates Orga was producer and I was engineer and editor. It was a real pleasure to work on this disc - not only was the repertoire fresh and interesting (with pieces by Martinu, Français & Enescu), but working with the Trio was a whole lot of fun.

Writing in The Observer, Fiona Maddocks said "This disc of works written in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century is full of discoveries, and played with great wit and finesse by the Lendvai String Trio ... What a fine debut."

In the October 2011 issue of Gramophone, Edward Greenfield said "The Lendvai players deserve credit for this excellent disc."

On Musicweb International, Steve Arloff said "this is in every way an excellent and exciting disc played with impeccable precision by a fabulous trio."

Destination Paris is released by Stone Records.

Major recording project with Limelight Musicals

3 September 2011

FrankandRosyPosterPoptasticPosterDazzleposterIn a few weeks I will be back in the studio with a big new project to record three shows from Limelight Musicals. Limelight is a new company formed by composer and writer Andrew Bailey, who specialises in creating shows for children. Having been involved in previous productions of all his shows (creating sound effects, playing drums etc) I can vouch for their exceptional quality. They are packed with catchy tunes, witty lyrics and captivating storylines, and are perfectly pitched at schools who just can't face the thought of doing Joseph yet again!

Brian Farley has made a fabulous set of band arrangements for Dazzle, Poptastic and Frank & Rosy. These arrangements are available for schools to use, but many schools don't have access to suitable musicians, and would welcome the chance to use backing tracks. So that's what we are going to record in October - using some of London's top West End and session players. During November and December we will then be overdubbing solo voices and choir, so that we can also produce complete show CDs to inspire a new generation to take to the stage.

Trinity Guildhall releases recordings of complete new piano exam syllabus

1 September 2011

TG Piano 0to8Trinity Guildhall have released CD recordings of their complete new 2012-2014 piano exam syllabus, performed by Pamela Lidiard, Peter Wild and John York. They are available as stand-alone CDs, or included with the printed music books.

I produced, engineered and edited all eight CDs, with the recordings talking place in the Menuhin Hall in Stoke d'Abernon, Surrey. It was a big job – a total of 163 pieces, recorded over eight days between January and April this year.

I also worked very closely with Trinity Guildhall's publishing department, proof-reading the newly-typeset pieces and checking against original sources to make sure that what we recorded exactly matched the printed books and the composers' intentions.

Mark Rogers teams up with Designer Music Ltd

1 September 2011

I'm delighted to say that I have gone into partnership with Designer Music Ltd to create a new record label - DML Recordings. Designer Music is the creation of Simon James, founder member of Acoustic Alchemy, and a quite formidable jazz, classical and flamenco acoustic guitarist.

astarforchristmasazaharWe are starting the label by digitally releasing music from Designer Music's extensive back catalogue, but have a bunch of exciting new projects on the go as well.

I've known Simon since I was at school, but it's only in the past few years that we have both realised our long-held ambition to work together. Our first collaboration was Azahar, a gorgeous collection of spanish guitar music released through Barking Green Records. Our latest release is A Star For Christmas, released for download only through Prestige/Elite Records.
